Longtime Fox News host Greta Van Susteren, beloved by her many fans, abruptly and unexpectedly announced her departure from Fox News early Tuesday morning but offered no reason for her decision.
All that was immediately reported was that fellow network personality Britt Hume had been selected to replace Susteren on her highly successful program, “On The Record,” according to Politico.
Moreover, he was to start that very evening, meaning that Susteren’s departure was effective immediately.
What a very sad day for Fox News and its fans.
In a joint statement released later that morning, Fox News co-presidents Jack Abernethy and Bill Shine expressed their gratitude “for Greta’s many contributions over the years” and also wished her “continued success,” suggesting that she perhaps intended to set up shop with another network.
They also offered their reasons for choosing Hume as her replacement.
“As one of the best political analysts in the industry, Brit is the ideal choice to host a nightly political program while the most dynamic and captivating election in recent history unfolds,” they wrote. “Having Brit at the helm of this show will enable Fox News to continue on track to have its highest-rated year ever as the network dominates the cable news landscape.”
What remained unreported was why Susteren left, though a source speaking with Politico claimed that it involved a financial dispute of some kind.
However, according to Business Insider, the Fox News host’s departure occurred on the very same day that “21st Century Fox announced it had settled former host Gretchen Carlson’s sexual harassment lawsuit against ex-CEO Roger Ailes.”
There will undoubtedly be speculation about whether those two events were related, but unfortunately all we have to work with at the moment is speculation.
