BREAKING: NYPD Arrests Man Near Rockefeller Tree With Gas Can, Matches and Hamas Book

Police arrested a Bronx man near Rockefeller Plaza on Monday after he became combative with officers.

New York Police Department Critical Response Command officers discovered Yuriy Alterman, 38, was carrying matches, a book entitled “Son of Hamas” and a two-gallon gasoline can half-filled with a fluid that smelled like gasoline, WNBC reported.

Law enforcement reportedly responded after a witness reported the man yelling, “F*** the NYPD” and throwing a bottle.

As officers approached Alterman, he allegedly told them, “Sometimes you guys do things that make others do things, even though that’s not who we are,” an official told NBC News.

He then asked the officers, “Have you seen the news today?”

Law enforcement arrested Alterman after he became aggressive with them.

He was charged with making a terroristic threat, a felony, obstruction of government administration and disorderly conduct. He was expected to be arraigned Tuesday night, WPIX reported.

Alterman has been arrested twice this year on criminal mischief and criminal trespass charges, police said.

The man allegedly said he did not intend to set anything on fire, according to WPIX, and authorities said Alterman did not get close to the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center or the crowds.

The book, “Son of Hamas,” was written by Mosab Hassan Yousef, son of West Bank Hamas leader Sheikh Hassan Yousef, according to the New York Post.

It’s a good thing citizens reported Alterman’s erratic behavior. We are living in dangerous times, and there’s no way to know what people are thinking.

However, when one spots someone walking around with a gas can shouting expletives in an area of town bustling with holiday shoppers, it’s a good idea to alert authorities — just to be safe.
