Clinton Campaign Sends Cease-And-Desist Letter To Trump Campaign Over TV Ad

The Clinton campaign has fired one last volley in its attempt to claim Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is not under investigation, even though the FBI continues to probe conflict of interest allegations between the Clinton Foundation and the Hillary Clinton-led State Department.

On Sunday, the campaign sent cease-and-desist notices to TV and radio stations demanding they stop running ads from pro-Donald Trump super PACs that claim Clinton is “under investigation” by the FBI.

“These ads falsely claim Secretary Clinton is under investigation by the FBI,” says the letter from the Clinton campaign’s general counsel.

The letter adds that “at no point” did the federal agency “reopen” its probe of Clinton’s email practices.

“Therefore the claim in these ads is provably false,” Elias wrote.

The Clinton campaign fired off the missive Sunday, the same day that FBI Director James Comey announced that despite finding 650,000 emails related to the Clinton-era State Department on the computer of Clinton aide Huma Abedin’s estranged husband, the FBI was standing by its decision not to recommend indictment against Clinton for using her private email server to send and receive classified information.

The FBI had never officially reopened the Clinton probe because it was never officially closed. Comey never announced Sunday that the investigation into the emails was ended, only that the FBI had examined the emails to and from Clinton.

Further, the FBI has an investigation under way into the conduct of the Clinton Foundation, although the precise nature and status of the investigation are uncertain.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said that he is certain Clinton has not seen the last of investigations, a promise repeated by many House Republican leaders.

“The investigations into her crimes will go on for a long, long time,” Trump said during a Michigan rally Sunday. “The rank-and-file special agents at the FBI won’t let her get away with her terrible crimes, including the deletion of her 33,000 emails after receiving a congressional subpoena.”

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus also noted that Clinton has a long way to go before she can claim she is no longer under investigation.

“The FBI’s findings from its criminal investigation of Hillary Clinton’s secret email server were a damning and unprecedented indictment of her judgment. The FBI found evidence Clinton broke the law, that she placed highly classified national security information at risk and repeatedly lied to the American people about her reckless conduct,” Priebus said.

“None of this changes the fact that the FBI continues to investigate the Clinton Foundation for corruption involving her tenure as secretary of state. Hillary Clinton should never be president,” he said.
