Hollywood actor and iconic liberal George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, have decided to support the Southern Poverty Law Center to help combat “hate groups” with a donation of $1 million dollars.
There’s only one problem… what constitutes a “hate group” for the SPLC is extremely skewed, and the donation ignores the fact that the SPLC itself has been linked to domestic terrorist activities.
Who is the hate group now?
According to CNN, the couple made their donation to the SPLC through their organization, The Clooney Foundation for Justice. The donation comes amid the massive media coverage focused on the aftermath of the Charlottesville, Virginia, confrontation between white supremacists and so-called “antifa” and Black Lives Matter protesters that ended in the death of one young woman.
“What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate,” the Clooneys said in a joint statement.
In an additional statement of his own (probably trying to upstage his own wife), George Clooney slid in a veiled attack on President Donald Trump.
“Amal and I wanted to add our voice (and financial assistance) to the ongoing fight for equality. There are no two sides to bigotry and hate.”
That was a reference, of course, to Trump’s entirely accurate opinion that Charlottesville saw violence from both “Unite the Right” protesters as well as from antifa and other liberal organizations that joined to protest the march.
The Clooneys say they’re very “proud” to support an organization like the SPLC whose main goal is to find and root out hatred, bigotry, and racism. But the SPLC has a warped definition of what those terms mean — and it almost always reflects badly on a conservative organization or an organization with conservative values.
In the SPLC’s much talked about “hate group” map that is available on their website, users can view where the SPLC-designated hate organizations are in relation to where they live. But according to The Washington Times, the map “names racist groups like the Aryan Nation alongside mainstream conservative organizations such as the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Family Research Council.”
The Pacific Justice Institute — a conservative legal defense foundation — is also branded a “hate group” by the SPLC. And the institute’s president, Brad Dacus, knows exactly why.
“Why is the Southern Poverty Law Center doing this? It’s simple. They want to vilify and isolate anyone that doesn’t agree with their very extremist leftist policy and ideology,” he told The Washington Times. “This isn’t about defending civil rights; this is about attacking civil rights.”
Oddly enough, Maajid Nawaz, a “British intellectual candidate for Parliament as a Liberal Democrat,” spoke out against the SPLC’s inherent bias saying, “that in its constant exaggerations and outright fabrications about ‘hate,” the SPLC had itself created exactly what it claimed to be fighting.”
And that kind of hate-mongering is dangerous. As the Horowitz Freedom Center notes, in August 2012, a killer named Floyd Corkins walked into the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the Family Research Council with 100 rounds of ammunition and a pistol with the goal of killing people, all because the SPLC designated the group as “homophobic.”
“When an FBI agent subsequently asked Corkins why he had chosen to target FRC, the would-be killer replied: ‘It was a, uh, Southern Poverty Law lists, uh, anti-gay groups. I found them online. I did a little bit of research, went to the website. Stuff like that.’”
In North Carolina in 2015, three Muslim students were murdered by an “anti-religious activist” whose likes on Facebook included the SPLC along with other extreme left groups.
So while Clooney and the SPLC want to get on their high horses and combat domestic terrorism and “track” hate groups… maybe they take a long look in the mirror first. The hypocrisy is staggering.
This is what liberal extremist bias looks like.
