While professional media pundits were busy calculating who won Tuesday’s vice presidential debate, the Rev. Franklin Graham shared what impressed him the most, and it’s something many likely overlooked.
For Graham, it was Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s unabashed and earnest expression of his faith in Jesus Christ that truly set him apart from many other politicians in our modern secularist society.
During his debate with Democrat Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, Pence said, “My Christian faith is at the very heart of who I am. I was also raised in a wonderful family of faith. It was church on Sunday morning and grace before dinner. But my Christian faith became real for me when I made a personal decision for Christ when I was a freshman in college.”
He continued, “And I have tried to live that out — however imperfectly every day of my life since. With my wife at my side, we have followed a calling into public service where we have tried to keep faith with the values that we cherish. And with regard to when I struggle, I appreciate and I have a great deal of respect for the Senator Kaine’s sincere faith. I truly do.”
In a Facebook post Wednesday, Graham said he was heartened to hear GOP nominee Donald Trump’s running mate unabashedly discuss his faith.
“Many politicians and public figures today avoid mentioning their faith. It is because secularism has permeated our society,” Graham wrote.
“George Washington was not afraid to kneel in prayer. General Patton prayed before he went into battle. Abraham Lincoln spoke unhesitatingly about Almighty God in the Gettysburg address,” he continued.
“Last night during the Vice Presidential Debate, it was so encouraging to hear Governor Pence share about his personal relationship with Jesus Christ,” Graham added.
According to Graham, while some politicians might speak of their faith in abstract generalities or shy away from taking a stand on their moral convictions, Pence boldly did the opposite.
“Some politicians may talk about their faith in generalities, but there aren’t many who are bold enough to talk about Jesus Christ. As a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ I’m grateful for those unashamed to speak His Name and live out their faith in Him,” he said.
Graham concluded his remarks with a verse from the Book of Acts: “The Bible says, ‘Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved’ (Acts 4:12).”
He was not alone in his praise of Pence, as most viewer polls from the evening showed a major Pence victory over Kaine.
