Liberals waited in anticipation Tuesday night for the “big reveal” from MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow regarding an exclusive scoop she claimed to have about President Donald Trump’s tax returns, which he has consistently refused to release publicly.
After a nearly two-hour buildup of cryptic promotional tweets and a lengthy conspiratorial soliloquy to begin her program, she ultimately revealed … that Trump had paid a significant amount of taxes in 2005 on an equally significant income, disproving the theories that he wasn’t really rich or has avoided paying taxes.
As to the viewers who were left largely disappointed by the non-story, Maddow has essentially blamed them for getting their hopes up too high, and not herself for hyping the story, according to Fox News.
The excuses came during an interview with a reporter for The Associated Press in which Maddow let herself off the hook with the claim, “Because I have information about the president doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily a scandal.”
“It doesn’t mean that it’s damning information,” she said. “If other people leaped to that conclusion without me indicating that it was, that hype is external to what we did.”
“My priority is to get the story right and put it into proper context and explain the weight of it and why it is important,” Maddow continued. “This is a super interesting first window into his finances, and the question of his finances is a legitimate scandal.”
As to the Trump White House releasing the pertinent information from his 2005 tax return before Maddow could get around to doing so during her lengthy buildup, she laughed it off as mere confirmation that the information she had obtained was correct.
“I don’t really care,” Maddow stated. “It is funny to me that a president would spend this much energy and political capital to keep secret his finances and his taxes specifically and simultaneously would want to brag about how much money he made. If that’s really what he wants the story to be, he can release all of his taxes and we can all glory in his immense wealth.”
However, Maddow’s blame shifting didn’t sit well with social media users, as the tweet trackers at Twitchy reported. Numerous individuals reminded Maddow that she herself had hyped the story with her “breathless tweets” as well as a countdown clock in the bottom corner of MSNBC’s broadcast ahead of her program.

Here is the “countdown clock” that had been mentioned, obviously intended to hype Maddow’s report.

As if those excuses from Maddow weren’t enough to anger liberal viewers being told it was their fault for expecting Maddow to actually present some sort of bombshell news, she actually had the audacity during an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s late night program to insinuate that she had done them all a favor, comparing her viewers to people in a desert dying for water, of which she was able to provide “a drop” to quench their thirst.

Maddow is the one who set expectations high with her tweet and MSNBC contributed to raising expectations with its countdown clock. Considering Maddow’s unhealthy obsession with discrediting Trump, particularly in regard to his taxes and wealth, what exactly should viewers have expected from her breathless “BREAKING” tweet announcing she had finally obtained the ever-elusive returns?
Maddow may have gained a ratings bonanza that night, but she let her viewers down big time, and now she is making it worse by blaming them instead of accepting responsibility for over-hyping a story about nothing.
