The alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl at a school in the D.C. suburb of Rockville, M.D. has received extremely insufficient coverage from the mainstream media, contends media watchdog group NewsBusters.
The young girl said she was confronted by two male students last Thursday and was then forcefully taken into the men’s restroom and violently raped.
The alleged perpetrators, Jose O. Montano, 17, and Henry E. Sanchez-Milian,18, were arrested and charged with the rape.
Montano and Sanchez-Milian had only been attending the school for a few months when the attack took place and both “were among tens of thousands of young people who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally in 2016,” the Baltimore Sun reported.
Despite the fact that White House press secretary Sean Spicer spoke about the crime during a White House press briefing, NewsBusters noted that the major media networks did little to no reporting on it, including NBC, MSNBC, CNN, ABC and CBS.
“In fact,” wrote the media watchdog group, “the only mention NewsBusters could find of this story on any of these networks were brief reports on the 4 am CNN and CBS early morning shows.”
At a time when controversy over sanctuary cities and crimes by illegal immigrants are at the top of national discussion, NewsBusters pointed out a seemingly intentional lack of coverage.
“[The] liberal school officials have downplayed the story and dismissed the fact that Democrat immigration policies allowed this to happen. Maybe that’s why ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and MSNBC, don’t want to report it; it makes their side look bad,” NewsBusters wrote.
Fox News Channel’s Bret Baier was the first on national television to report on the crime on his Monday program.
He and Fox host Tucker Carlson both gave an update on the situation later that week.
Many parents of children in the school voiced their frustrations and concerns at a PTA meeting on Tuesday.
“I’m very mad. I can’t believe this is happening in my kids’ school. There are a lot of people here that maybe don’t belong here. They haven’t been checked out and I really need to know that my kids are safe,” one parent said.
Another concerned parent said, “I know that if this country enforced the laws that are already on the books those two young men would not have been here and this rape, this horrendous rape, would not have occurred.
Fox 5 of Washington, D.C. reported Thursday that the attorney for Sanchez-Milian says the incident was consensual, and his client would plead not guilty to the rape charge.
In an email Attorney Andrew Jezic wrote, “This case is a perfect example of why we have a presumption of innocence-because most people have assumed he is guilty, only based on hearsay accounts, even though he did not confess.”
