A Nevada mother was arrested after authorities discovered she had faked her 10-year-old son’s death to raise money.
Authorities arrested Victoria Morrison, 31, on Friday after they discovered she was collecting money from a GoFundMe account that was created after her child supposedly died, according to KTVN.
An investigation began after the Carson City Sheriff’s Office spoke with an unidentified person who said she had talked to Morrison’s spouse, who claimed the child was alive.
Deputies said Morrison told them that the child had died of leukemia a few days earlier and had been cremated. Morrison also told deputies that a friend had created the GoFundMe account on her behalf.
Deputies then visited the hotel where the Morrisons were staying and found the child alive.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong told KOLO the boy had been diagnosed with a treatable childhood illness over a year ago, but the Morrisons used the illness to convince the boy, the schools and the public that he was terminally ill.
In fact, the boy had been profiled by local news outlet KOLO during the Christmas season when the boy got a Care Flight helicopter ride as a gift.
The Mercury News reported that the child had not attended school for months and that Morrison was keeping him in the hotel after she announced his death.
Morrison was charged with obtaining money under false pretenses and child neglect. She was booked in the Carson City Jail on burglary and obstruction charges. Morrison’s bail was set at $20,000.
The GoFundMe page reportedly collected about $2,000. A spokeswoman for the website said the campaign was removed and all donations would be refunded.
The child and his three siblings were placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
