Philadelphia “Cinco de Mayo” Party Cancelled for Fear of Immigration Raids

The city of Philadelphia cancelled its largest Cinco de Mayo event, El Carnaval de Puebla, because current conditions in the country supposedly weren’t favorable toward immigrants, especially illegal ones living in fear of a nationwide crackdown spurred by President Donald Trump.

Event organizer Edgar Ramirez told WCAU on Friday that the annual parade was canceled because of the crackdown on illegal aliens.

Ramirez said the decision was a “sad but responsible” one, adding that those in the Mexican-American community were discouraged by the news of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arresting and detaining those in the country illegally.

Last week, WCAU reported that 248 individuals in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia were in custody awaiting deportation after a recent ICE raid.

“The group of six organizers decided to cancel unanimously,” Ramirez said. “Everyone is offended by the actions of ICE. They did not feel comfortable holding the event.”

There is no reason for people who are in this country legally to be offended by law enforcement agents upholding the law, but apparently carnival coordinators thought it best for the entire community to shut down the event, which has been held annually since 2007, because of safety concerns.

El Carnaval de Puebla announced the cancellation on its Facebook page, where it said it was concerned for “the safety and welfare of our fellow carnival people and their families.”

Apparently they were expecting some sort of raid en masse, but their fears were groundless.

WCAU reported that ICE Officer Khaalid Walls told them in an email that “ICE’s enforcement actions are targeted and lead-driven. ICE does not conduct sweeps or raids that target aliens indiscriminately.”

It’s astonishing that those in the Mexican-American community, not to mention the mainstream media, want to blame President Donald Trump for the cancellation of this Cinco de Mayo festival, but in reality ICE is simply doing its job.

People expressing outrage need to be reminded that illegal immigrants are, after all, breaking the law.
