Poll Shows Clinton Ahead By 9 Points In Key Battleground State

According to a new Franklin and Marshall College Poll, in the first week following the first presidential debate Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has opened up a nine-point lead in the state of Pennsylvania among likely voters over Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee.

The poll found that Clinton has 47 percent support among likely voters while Trump has 38 percent.

According to the Pennsylvania-based poll, Gary Johnson the Libertarian candidate received five percent support and Green Party candidate Jill Stein received no support.

The survey, which was conducted after the first presidential debate last Monday, was taken between September 28 through October 2.

The same poll in August, prior to the first debate, showed that Clinton had only a five percent lead over Trump, 45 percent to 40 percent.

Several other findings were also revealed in the Franklin and Marshall poll.

Sixty percent of likely voters said that Clinton has the necessary experience to be president, while only 18 percent said the same of Trump.

While 48 percent favored Clinton’s character and judgement to be president, only 23 percent favored Trump.

In regards to terrorism, 39 percent said Trump is better suited to handle the terrorist threat, compared to 44 percent who said they believe Clinton is more equipped for the job.

Thirty-four percent believe Clinton is the more honest of the candidates, while 29 percent said they trust Trump more.

While Trump is doing well in many areas of Pennsylvania, the Democratic candidate has strong support in the state’s major cities, including Philadelphia.

“You cannot lose that area by 26 points and carry the state,” said Franklin and Marshall pollster Terry Madonna.

Prior to the September 26 debate, Trump had been running side-by-side with Clinton in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state.

According to the RealClear Politics polling average, which includes and combines many of the major polls, Clinton has a 3.5-point lead over Trump in Pennsylvania.
