Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and the Democrat Party have branded themselves, more or less, as the “uniters.” They’re the party of inclusion (provided that doesn’t include Christians), diversity (just so long as nobody from Europe is involved) and all faiths (again, so long as those pesky Christians stay in their place, which is nowhere near the spotlight).
However, if she wants to win over Republican rival Donald Trump’s supporters, she might have a difficult time. Not only is she anathema to everything she stands for, but apparently she thinks they’re a “basket of deplorables.”
Mind you, “deplorables” isn’t actually a word. On the other hand, about half of the neologisms I use in my writing aren’t, so I’m willing to give her a slide on that.
What I’m not willing to let go is this quote, courtesy of The Hill:
“You know, just to be grossly generalist, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables,” Clinton said to an audience in New York City. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”
Now, just so we’re clear, Hillary Clinton isn’t running for president of the states demarcated in blue. She’s not running for president of the editorial board of The New Yorker. She’s running for president of the United States of America.
At present, the RealClearPolitics poll average puts Donald Trump’s numbers at 42.9 percent. I’m even willing to round down to 42 percent for Clinton’s sake (and to make the math a little easier). That is 21 percent of a nation that she hoped to govern that she believed to be a “basket of deplorables.”
There is something vaguely Gargamel-ish about Clinton’s desire to preside over and politically destroy human beings whose only crime is disagreeing with her. To call them a “basket of deplorables” is beyond even what we would normally expect from Clinton when talking about those who oppose her.
By the way, the vast majority of that “basket of deplorables” hasn’t forced the director of the FBI to investigate them for a felony and then hold a press conference where he made it clear that the basket of deplorables had broken the law but that he didn’t think he could obtain a conviction.
That basket of deplorables — or, at least, most of them — have not seduced an intern less than half their age, committed adultery with them, and then lied to a special prosecutor about it.
That basket of deplorables, “racist” though a handful of them may be, have not signed a death warrant for a mentally incompetent African-American man to prove to voters that they were tough on crime. Bill Clinton did that back in 1992, when he interrupted the presidential campaign to make sure that Ricky Ray Rector, a man who saved the pie from his last meal “for later,” received a lethal injection.
But don’t think that the basket of deplorables that is the Clinton family didn’t have some mercy in them. After all, when financier Marc Rich paid the Clinton family, he was given a pardon on Clinton’s last day of office. So, if you’re keeping score here: Clinton donors 1, mentally incapacitated minorities 0.
There is only one “basket of deplorables” in this election, and there are two people in it: William Jefferson and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Any statement to the contrary is simply misleading — at best.
Please like and share on Facebook and Twitter if you agree that Clinton is far more “deplorable” than the average supporter of Donald Trump.
