In the 2016 election, Michigan stunned the nation by going red. Now, in the 2018 midterms, it could be going Ted.
In an interview with The Daily Caller, conservative rock star, Second Amendment activist and Michigan native Ted Nugent seemed to indicate he was open to running as a Republican for Senate in his home state in 2018, challenging Democrat incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
“I’m always very interested in making my country and the great state of Michigan great again and there is nothing I wouldn’t do to help in any way I possibly can,” Nugent said Wednesday.
“Though we dodged the toxic blue bullet on Nov. 8 and showed that the real Michigan is bright red, the embarrassing high-crime blue smudges in the state must be fixed and removed ASAP,” Nugent said
“What sort of anti-American fool doesn’t believe we need secure borders?” Nugent asked rhetorically. “What sort of Michael Moore freak sides with criminals instead of law enforcement heroes?
“Who on God’s good, green earth can possibly support the redistribution of hard-working Americans’ earnings to people unwilling to earn their own way?” he added. “We the people are justifiably fed up with ‘Fedzilla’ and bureaucrats of every stripe.”
Nugent, who will be 70 when the 2018 election is held, said he will decide to run if he feels he could “provide meaningful upgrades and improvements in the American quality of life for the most productive and truly needy amongst us.”
Nugent also said that his campaign slogan would be “Make Michigan, Michigan again.”
“My beloved birth state of Michigan still has godawful rules, laws and regulations that are more akin to Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Massachusetts than the real Michigan, so I remain poised to do what I can,” Nugent said.
Nugent added that his campaign song would be “a very loud ‘Stranglehold,’” referring to his rocker of the same name.
Nugent also posted about it on his Facebook page Wednesday, saying that “f these GOP sonsab****es dont get it right this time I will come charging in as the ultimate WE THE PISSED OFF PEOPLE Mr FixIt Consitutional firebreathing s***kicker candidate from hell!” (WARNING: Some strong language ahead.)
According to Fox News, both Nugent and fellow Michigan native Kid Rock are being floated as possibilities to run in the 2018 election. As much as we do like Mr. Rock here at Conservative Tribune, voters might be somewhat wary of a man who once sang that he was going to “start an escort service for all the right reasons / and set up shop at the top of Four Seasons … stoned pimp, stoned freak, stoned out of my mind / I once was lost, but now I’m just blind.”
Yes, he’s changed, but I don’t know if those attack ads are going to go down too well.
As for the man who inspired his campaign catchphrase — President Donald Trump — Nugent said he was pleased with the presidency so far.
“He is addressing and acting upon the most obvious needed upgrades good Americans have been craving and demanding for a very long time,” Nugent said.
Even with Michigan going red in 2016, 2018 may be a more difficult outing for the Republican Party in the Wolverine State. Stabenow is considered a major voice in the Democrat Senate caucus, and she won re-election in 2012 by 19 points. Given the number of seats the Republicans stand to pick up in more competitive states in 2018, it’s questionable just how much in terms of resources will go to any race in Michigan.
However, the man who helped shepherd Trump to victory in Michigan said he would love to see Nugent run.
“Ted Nugent is definitely someone who is in Michigan, he is involved in the public debates here, and he was really there for Donald Trump when he was needed,” Scott Hagerstrom, Trump’s Michigan state director, said.
“I would certainly welcome him giving it a hard look,” he added.
Stranger things have happened, I suppose. There’s nothing that could turn Michigan redder than a dose of cat scratch fever.
… Yes, I know. I had to do it. I’m so sorry.
