President Barack Obama was among those emailed by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton using her private server, according to an email released Tuesday by WikiLeaks.
“we need to clean this up … he has emails from her .. they do not say state.gov,” Clinton aide Cheryl Mills emailed Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta on March 7, 2015 as the story of Clinton’s private email server was unfolding.
“Obama clearly lied when he told CBS’ Bill Plante that he learned about Clinton’s use of a private email account and server ‘the same time everybody else learned it through news reports,’” Edmund Kozak reported on LifeZette.
That same day, Obama spoke about the emails with CBS News and was asked how he learned about Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was his secretary of state during his first term.
“The same time everybody else learned it, through news reports,” he said. The existence of the private server had been revealed about a week before the interview.
“… the policy of my administration is to encourage transparency… and I’m glad that Hillary has instructed that those emails that had to do with official business need to be disclosed,” Obama said in March.
That comment prompted an email from Clinton aide Josh Schwerin to campaign communications coordinator Jennifer Palmieri and others.
“Jen you probably have more on this but it looks like POTUS just said he found out HRC was using her personal email when he saw it in the news,” he emailed.
The message was later forwarded to Mills who alerted Podesta.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest later clarified that while Obama knew Clinton’s email, he “was not aware of the details of how that email address and that server had been set up.”
The latest revelation comes on top of comments in an FBI report that indicated Obama communicated with Clinton using her private email server and used a pseudonym in doing so.
As reported by Western Journalism, the FBI report includes an interview with Clinton aide Huma Abedin in which she was shown an email exchange between Clinton and Obama. However, Abedin did not recognize the sender’s name.
The report explained what happened next.
“Once informed that the sender’s name is believed to be pseudonym used by the president, Abedin exclaimed, ‘How is this not classified?’” the report says. “Abedin then expressed her amazement at the president’s use of a pseudonym and asked if she could have a copy of the email.”
The contents of the emails between Obama and Clinton have not been made public by the State Department, which has cited “presidential communications privilege,” to hide the communications from the Freedom of Information Act.
The FBI report has not provided details about the emails between Clinton and Obama.
